At that time I decided not to do it cause I didn’t have the old WOTLK map extracts anymore. Now I’m happy to make public I’ve been working bit by bit on this the past few weeks (it takes time to generate the needed map tiles). After aligning the continents, cutting the map into tiles and a bit of coding for the map it’s now up on http://compare.wyrimaps.net/ for your comparison adventures!

The current live version of WyriMaps doesn’t have a way to change the nodes displayed on the map. Due to the Midsummer festival this feature was lower on the priority list. After that the work on a way to change what nodes to display started. Instead of dropdown menu WyriMaps used in the past a screen like the Share window is under development as we speak. It shouldn’t take to long to finish it only problems now are the window framework that might change to a more slick one since the current one has some problems in Chrome. All of the general nodes and herbs are added. Mining should follow pretty fast.

There is something I would like to preview before it goes live. The all new Share window. Coming from a simple link in the right upper corner it evolved into a slick modal box with multiple sharing options. The plain link is still there but now includes a little brother by either is.gd, u.nu, 0x.tc or bit.ly. A wide range of social sites like Twitter and Facebook are support. And the static image announced earlier this week is also included with HTML and BBCode.

With the new version of WyriMaps nearing it’s release I’ll show you one of it’s features. With static maps a portion of the map can easy be including in a blog or forum post. This static map is exactly like the ones Google offers but with our own tile layers. We’ll be using this feature in the upcoming share window with a set of predefine sizes. The preview only supports the map using latitude longitude coordinates but the final version will include nodes, in-game coordinates for the World of Warcraft map and the same fast delivery setup as the tiles.

The picture above shows the first working POC of WyriMaps running on V3. With this version my goal to run (smooth) on mobile devices comes a bit closer. I’m using the full javascript engine rewrite to switch to V3 and make more use of it’s features. Another thing that is going to change is the way URL’s are build up in the link to window. To be backwards compatible rewrite rules will be put in place to redirect the old url’s to the new ones without breaking the old links. Something else changing is the way nodes are loaded from the server. Instead of AJAX calls we are moving to on-demand JavaScript loading. This should further more lower the load on the servers and speedup the site experience. More news is soon to follow (and also screens of the different platforms supported).
