A while ago Robbie Alexander suggested to create a comparison map between WOTLK and Cataclysm.

@WyriMaps is there anyway you could lineup the different map layers so you can easily switch between them to quickly compare them? Thanks!

At that time I decided not to do it cause I didn’t have the old WOTLK map extracts anymore. Now I’m happy to make public I’ve been working bit by bit on this the past few weeks (it takes time to generate the needed map tiles). After aligning the continents, cutting the map into tiles and a bit of coding for the map it’s now up on http://compare.wyrimaps.net/ for your comparison adventures!

Some of you might already have noticed but in the upper right corner there is a new block showing. This block allows you to switch maps without leaving the website. For now the current WotLK and Cataclysm maps are included but in the future more maps will be added to make the overall map better as a while and no need to use tricks for add outland on the same map but on it’s own map instead. cata.wyrimaps.net will as a result of this also be redirected to the main domain.

The current live version of WyriMaps doesn’t have a way to change the nodes displayed on the map. Due to the Midsummer festival this feature was lower on the priority list. After that the work on a way to change what nodes to display started. Instead of dropdown menu WyriMaps used in the past a screen like the Share window is under development as we speak. It shouldn’t take to long to finish it only problems now are the window framework that might change to a more slick one since the current one has some problems in Chrome. All of the general nodes and herbs are added. Mining should follow pretty fast.

While the development of the node window is in progress on a side track the new map extractor/sticher/slicer is under development. This to ensure faster map updates on patch days. As result of this the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm map is now up here. More news to follow !

With the upcoming Midsummer Festival tomorrow the site has been upgraded to the new version. The new version comes with a wider array of supported devices, new share possibilities and a static map. While the site is still getting it’s tweaks it’s ready to provide a easy to use map with the Midsummer Festival bonfires for the upcoming week.

With the new version of WyriMaps nearing it’s release I’ll show you one of it’s features. With static maps a portion of the map can easy be including in a blog or forum post. This static map is exactly like the ones Google offers but with our own tile layers. We’ll be using this feature in the upcoming share window with a set of predefine sizes. The preview only supports the map using latitude longitude coordinates but the final version will include nodes, in-game coordinates for the World of Warcraft map and the same fast delivery setup as the tiles.

Been busy today writing a new map stitcher in preparation of the upcoming new World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm. As a first test I generated The Battle for Gilneas that went fairly well. For the full continent stitches I needed some more RAM so ran those on a bigger box. While the script still needs tweaking the first results are in figured these images should be useful to people you’ll find them under this paragraph. While this is only 1 step in the map making progress as it is available on wyrimaps.net/wow it is a big one.

For some reason the new marker icon cause problems and is disabled for now.

Not sure why it happend (still looking into it but with this hotfix it doesn’t have priority) but after placing the normal marker back the problem was gone.

Going to see if there is a simple way of putting the new icon back on without this problem. Also the big coord bar on the upper right is not something I’m completely happy with. On screenshot pages like this one it looks to big. So I’m considering a version where only a link and a possible mail button are visible.
